GUADALAJARA PRISONERS
In May 28-29, 2004 in Guadalajara, Mexico, the Third Summit of Heads of
State of Latin American, the Caribbean and the European Union took place.
The purpose of the Summit was to approve economic agreements and
investments on the part of the member countries of the European Union and,
at the same time, to fortify the economic, cultural, ideological
penetration of Latin America and the Carribbean by multinational
corporations. Thousands of people took to the streets to oppose these
devastating plans that are being imposed by the powerful few upon a
majority of the population. Workers, farmers, students, social
organizations, and various punk and anarchist collectives tried to disrupt
the summit and inform the public about the negative effects that such
agreements will have on the already challenging reality of daily survival
in Mexico.
The demonstration was brutally repressed. After intense clashes with
the police, that included some attacks on corporate property,
authorities detained 150 people, of which 49 were placed in prison:
10 people were sentenced
3 people are still in prison awaiting trial
30 people are free on bail
4 minors have already served their prison sentences and finally free.
The charges that they face include rioting, gang activity, carrying
weapons, property destruction, robbery, and attacking the police. In
addition, 8 comrades from around the world were deported. For the past
year following these events, there has been a permanent encampment in
solidarity with the prisoners and an on-going campaign to gain their
release. Supporters are still fighting intense police repression in
Guadalajara, a city constantly becoming more conservative and right-wing.

Yesterday the bail was paid for the last comrade that remained in jail and he was supposed to be released on probation, but that wasn't possible because at the last minute they found out that he was also facing other charges with other comrades, because of that he was denied release. Today, we went to the prison and we met with his lawyer in charge of his case. He told us that they were doing everything possible to complete the paperwork for the immediate release of this comrade- Jose Luis Alejo Vasquez, though he will still have a case pending. So we will stay informed about what happens...The bail was $2500, but when the other comrade, Francisco Felipe Garcia,
was released, they paid only enough for the damages, and still have to pay the rest of the bail.
Francisco Felipe Garcia gained his release after a comrade from France who lives in Guadalajara used her house as collateral to pay the damages and someone else used his car to cover the bail. So he is supposed to be free on probabation on October 15th at 2pm.
In the case that the comrade is released, no one will remain in jail (only under proceedings.) We await the resolution of their cases...
We will keep you informed about these things...
